Charles Read is an accomplished senior executive and entrepreneur with more than 50 years of financial leadership experience in a broad range of industries, as well as a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA). His extensive background stretches across accounting, tax, manufacturing, construction, information technology, marketing, transportation, logistics, human resources, wholesale distribution, insurance, credit, and more. He has held Series 7 and 66 Securities licenses. In addition, he is one of 86 people in the last 16 years to pass the US Tax Court Non-Attorney Practitioners Examination, which enables him to represent clients in the US Tax Court without being an attorney. Most recently, he was selected as one of seven new members of the Internal Revenue Service Advisory Council for the next three-year term.
Charles is not the typical CPA. He leverages his education, experience, and hard-earned wisdom to connect with individuals at every level within an organization. He creates impactful change as an advisor and solutions architect to resolve business-related challenges brought on by disruptive market forces and inefficient organizational planning. With a wealth of expertise as a CEO, CFO, COO, teacher, and consultant working in domestic and international markets, Charles is able to intuitively understand what a business needs to succeed and assist with laying out a strategic roadmap to accomplish that vision.
In addition to his executive career, Charles is a decorated United States Marine Corps sergeant, a combat veteran of the Vietnam War. While in service, he was trained by IBM as a computer programmer and later a systems engineer. He is a widower after nearly 45 years of marriage. His experiences serving in the USMC, as a husband, and father of five children helped instill a sense of discipline and responsibility that has aided him greatly throughout his professional life.
He continues his long history of giving back as a twenty-year member of the Rotary Club of Dallas, a member of the club’s Board of Directors, eleven years as Treasurer, and Chairman of the Rotary Club of Dallas Foundation. He is also currently on the Board of the Veterans Coalition of North Central Texas.
Professionally, Charles is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants, the Greater Dallas Restaurant Association, the Independent Insurance Agents of America, the National Association of Health Underwriters, the Texas Association of Health Underwriters, and the Dallas Chapter of Texas Association of Health Underwriters.
Over the course of his career, Charles has established himself as a thought leader in the field of executive and financial services for business owners. He is the author of two E-books, “Starting a New Business: Accounting, Finance, Payroll, and Tax Considerations” and “Small Business Short Course (Employees Book 1)” as well as numerous articles and blogs. He has provided live and on-demand webinars for hr.com and others. He has lectured small and large groups. He also taught, pro bono, “Introduction to Business” at the high school in his community for a number of years.
Charles Read received his BBA cum laude and MBA from the University of North Texas. As part of his requirements as a CPA, he undertakes numerous continuing professional educational courses each year.
Why is this his passion?
Charles and his wife have been in the payroll business since 1991 and started as Custom Payroll Associates, Inc. (CPAi). Originally a mobile onsite accounting franchise in which Charles Read served as the COO, Charles transformed the business into its present day incarnation after the franchisor went out of business. In 1999, he successfully maneuvered changing market demands and increased technology to retire the mobile piece of the accounting and consulting portion of his business in order to provide easier services offsite. He expanded CPAi’s operations to provide services nationally.
In 2005, Charles launched a high-quality, paperless payroll processing system via the internet to smaller companies as a way to capture a market previously ignored by the industry. This was the first “green payroll” in the country, known as Payroll On A Budget. Charles is responsible for the launch of GetPayroll a fresh new take on his current business designed to attract a younger market of small business owners with up to 50 employees requiring assistance managing their business’ payroll and tax obligations. His leadership and direction has grown CPAi steadily at a rate of 10% annually and placed it in the top 10% in size for payroll processing companies.
After his wife's passing, he decided to continue on their tradition by always striving to improve upon existing services. Charles discovered a client need and exceeded the expectations of the industry by designing and developing a game-changing new payroll product – SIMON 3-Click Paperless Payroll App - that will change the micro business payroll landscape. it completed its first phase of beta testing and is back in production to enter the marketplace at the end of 2019.
