Book: Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World

Why this book:

Marketing is a whole new world and changing constantly.  Social media has changed the whole landscape.


That you have to promote yourself.  Just writing a book, having a special product to sell is not enough.  You have to have a “Platform” to tout you and what you are promoting.


Part 1:

Michael starts off explaining why you need what he calls a platform to prime the pump to sell your compelling product.  He talks about the WOW in the product and gives a list of ten items to include in the wow some of which seem a little stretched:

  • Surprise
  • Anticipation
  • Resonance
  • Transcendence
  • Clarity
  • Presence
  • Universality
  • Longevity
  • Privilege

He goes on and talks about additional aspects of “WOW” and how to incorporate it into your product.

Part 2:

The second part deals with getting ready to launch your product.  Such entries as “Think Bigger … No Bigger” and set up your branding tools.  Things like:

  • Email Address
  • Email Signature
  • Business cards
  • Website
  • Social Media Profiles

Part 3:

Part Three is “Build Your Home Base”.  You need to understand your model, focus your efforts online, start a blog etc.  He lists a number of things to do to get your information and personality out into the public and some areas to develop and to avoid.  He goes on in part four to talk about ways to them expand your reach.  He talks about:

  • Building list
  • Giving away stuff
  • Twitter
  • Facebook
  • Traditional media

Part 4:

Part Four is “Engage your Tribe” which has to do with interacting with people who are interested in you and/or your product.  How to do it in a smart way and not upset people that you don’t need to.

Part 5:

His very final conclusion is as important an item as anything he says, “Take the First Step”. He relates a Tony Robbins fire walking experience and the fear that the unknown can bring and encourages you to “Take the First Step”.


This is not a how-to book.  This is an annotated outline of the things you need to think about in building your marketing platform.

Michael covers a huge amount of ground very quickly and in few words.  You will need to expand on what he talks about.  It covers a lot of ground but is only planting the seeds.  You will need a score or more times to be able to flesh it out and make it work for you.  But it is a great starting point.
